| Treatment Centers can be day programs, therapeutic group homes or residential treatment centers. Treatment centers in California are ranked by levels of security with level 14 being a locked facility or psychiatric health facility (PHF). Level 12 is an unlocked facility. If a child or teens runs away from a center in California the police are contacted. In other states the facility may retrieve the child or teen without the police getting involved. The purpose of the facility may vary. Some treatment centers are all inclusive and have the school, living facilities, and counseling on the same campus as in a residential treatment center. A therapeutic group home only has a therapeutic group home and the students are bussed to a school. A wilderness program offers therapeutic recreational programs. It is important to remember the objectives of the placement when searching for a facility. Things to consider is if the child or teen is a runaway, his or her level of stability, counseling needs, and academic needs. Also important is if the facility is accepted by the funding source such as a county post adoption program or a AB 2726/AB 3634. The counties and adoption programs want to work with non-sectarian, nonprofit programs or those who are affiliated with a nonprofit organization. Some facilities only work with state and county agencies and do not take AB funding sources.
